Stocking Rates

Claims that Australian meat chickens are kept in over-crowded sheds are thoroughly misleading.

In practice, farm managers stock at densities they have found work best for the welfare and productivity of their particular breed under their particular circumstances and always inside the maximum densities allowable under relevant Australian codes and regulations.

Density is not the most critical issue in determining bird welfare.  Research has shown that it is the way that the environment in which the flock is managed, rather than the amount of space that each bird has, that is most critical.
