Distribution and consumption of meat chickens

The price of chicken compared to other meat has improved dramatically over the years.

Price of Chicken Meat over Time

This has changed because:

  • Processing is cheaper, due to increased automation
  • Chickens grow to full size with less feed, because of improved breeding and better genetic lines of chickens that convert feed into meat more efficiently
  • Raising birds is more efficient due to improved strategies to keep birds healthy, a better understanding of birds’ nutritional needs and improved animal farming strategies

The true value that represents chicken today is clearly illustrated by the graph below that compares the price in 2008 Dollars.

This change in attitude is due to:

  • Greater diversity in the range of chicken products available
  • Improved quality and consistency of chicken meat products
  • Improved price competitiveness of chicken compared to other meat
  • Targeted, strongly focused product marketing
